TW6 - When the Humans Thought They Were People
With this album it is important to get an understanding of the title. As I have said many times, Johnny has a style all his own. It took me more than a year to truly understand the meaning of this title. Then it clobbered me. Before the arrival of the European newcomers to this magnificent land, the Northwest Native didn't elevate humans above animals or fish or plants. The concept of humans being superior to everything else seemed ridiculous to these people. As the famous Chief Seattle had been noted to say, ”How could one sell the air?”
With Johnny Moses’ style, this album dives deep into the traditions of the northern Puget Sound, and even into the Samish tribal territory of the San Juan Islands. It features a combination of songs and Ancestral stories, including an excellent story by Vi Hilbert. My favorite story is titled “The Bratty Girl”, which portrays an excellent Native point of view on how to deal with a brat…a brat of any age!
